Jones-Drew can be fined up to $60,000 for skipping minicamp, but is ready to dig in as he seeks a new deal. MJD believes he's outplayed the five-year, $30.95 million pact he signed in 2009. GM Gene Smith said Monday the Jags have no intention of renegotiating. There's still plenty of time for MJD to be convinced to report to training camp, but if things continue down the path they're headed, a lengthy holdout is a distinct possibility. The fact that he's willing to sacrifice money says a lot. It's a serious problem for a team coming off a 5-11 season.

This hardly earth-shattering news, as GM Gene Smith clearly stated in June that he expects Jones-Drew to fulfill the last two seasons of the five-year, $31 million contract signed back in 2009. The headstrong Jones-Drew appears to have his heels dug in for a training camp holdout. The question is whether it extends more than a week or two while failing to grab the attention of the team's brass.

Mularkey did stop short of predicting whether Jones-Drew would be fined the maximum $30,000 for missing the first day. Jones-Drew can be fined at that clip every single day he skips. "We’ll deal with the players who are here and are hoping he is one of them," said Mularkey. The Jags may open training camp without their top two skill-position players if Jones-Drew holds out and No. 5 overall draft pick Justin Blackmon remains unsigned. The Jaguars are haggling with Blackmon about "protective language" following his DUI arrest.

MJD is eligible to be fined $30,000 per day through camp, though he's willing to make that "sacrifice" to land a new deal. Although the team holds all of the leverage here, they could end up guaranteeing a portion of Jones-Drew's salary by way of compromise. If not, the holdout could reach the level of Chris Johnson's last year. Fantasy leaguers should be sure to "handcuff" with Rashad Jennings if intent on drafting Jones-Drew.

It's worth noting that GM Gene Smith says he has communicated with Jones-Drew. But per the Times Union, the holdout is "likely to last a long time." He's already missed a full week of camp and hasn't even met new head coach Mike Mularkey yet. With each day that MJD misses, fantasy owners selecting him are going to assume more and more risk. Chris Johnson, Larry Johnson and Jamal Anderson are among the running backs that failed to produce following holdouts. Emmitt Smith started slow after his 1993 holdout before catching fire.

"I expect Rashad will start, we'll just have to see," Mularkey said, leaving the door open ever so slightly. Jones-Drew's fines for skipping training camp have exceeded $1 million, while Jennings has averaged nearly five yards per preseason carry and blocked well in the blitz-pickup game. Jones-Drew could retake his lead back job at some point, but Jennings looks like the heavy favorite for early-season touches. The Jaguars open against Minnesota on September 9.

It sounds like it's going to take a change of heart from Jones-Drew in order for him to be active against the Vikings. The Jaguars certainly aren't budging. "There are no signs he's coming in anytime soon," Schefter stated. "... It certainly looks like this is going to go into the start of the regular season, and MJD will not be there for the Jaguars' regular season opener. Unless something changes between the two sides, and there are no indications that's happening anytime soon." Unless Jones-Drew is seriously trying to force a trade, we don't see how he's helping himself. He has lost this fight.

The Times Union passes along "rumors" that MJD will report this weekend, but we hadn't heard them and Mularkey doesn't seem to be buying them. "I have not heard from Maurice," said Mularkey. "I’ve heard those same things just like you have, but nothing from the people that need to tell its firm." Rashad Jennings has already been named the Jaguars' Week 1 starting running back.

Rashad Jennings will start, and the Jaguars aren't ready to hand MJD a big role immediately after a 38-day holdout. Jones-Drew will "get some reps to get Rashad rest," against the Vikings. Jags coaches will find out more about Jones-Drew's conditioning at Wednesday's practice, but for now he's only being counted on for a bit role in Week 1. He'll have to earn more snaps and touches with solid practice and on-field play as the season moves along.

Jaguars coach Mike Mularkey was noncommittal Monday when asked whether Maurice Jones-Drew has a Lisfranc foot injury.

Mularkey didn't say Jones-Drew for sure has a Lisfranc injury, either. Such an ailment would knock MJD out for the year. Mularkey did say Jones-Drew's injury is in the middle of his foot, which is where Lisfranc injuries typically occur. It sounds like the Jags are performing more tests and will know more by mid-week. Rashard Jennings will be this week's No. 1 fantasy waiver claim.

ESPN's Adam Schefter reports Maurice Jones-Drew has escaped a Lisfranc injury, but is still expected to be sidelined for "multiple games."

It's the best-case scenario, though NFL Network's Ian Rapoport adds that Jones-Drew is likely to miss a "significant" number of games. MJD has been diagnosed with a sprained foot, which will not require surgery. The tea leaves suggest MJD will miss Weeks 8-10 versus the Packers, Lions and Colts, and he could be held out for several games thereafter. With a chance to return for the fantasy playoffs, Jones-Drew should remain on fantasy rosters in the mean time. Rashad Jennings is the No. 1 waiver pickup in 12-team leagues this week.

The Jaguars have already ruled out Maurice Jones-Drew (foot) out for Week 9.

MJD wasn't believed to have a real shot at returning this week, but the fact that he's been ruled out so early doesn't bode well for his chances of suiting up in Week 10. Rashad Jennings will start against the Lions after rushing 17 times for 59 yards in Sunday's loss to the Packers.

Jaguars coach Mike Mularkey doesn't expect Maurice Jones-Drew (foot) back for Week 13.

Jones-Drew said in a Friday radio interview he's a "few weeks" away from returning. He won't suit up against the Bills, and will be questionable at best for Week 14 against the Jets. MJD last played in Week 7. With Jalen Parmele battling a leg injury, Rashad Jennings could be restored to feature-back duties against the Bills.
